Mount Marathon Race

I spent the Fourth of July with friends in Seward yesterday. God has blessed me with great neighbors (Chris, Kirsten and their daughter, Addison) and they invited me along to spend the day with them. Seward is about 3 1/2 or 4 hours south of Anchorage. It is a little touristy town that reminded me a little of Ellicottville back home. It was a beautiful place! I am looking forward to Aaron and I visiting together when he gets home.

The main reason for the trip was to watch Chris's dad, Bill, compete in the annual Mount Marathon Race. I wasn't sure what to think of the whole idea on the way down but once we got there I couldn't believe he would attempt something like this!

Here is the mountain that made up the race. Isn't that nuts! This picture doesn't do it justice it is very high! People come from all over to compete in this race. They were announcing runners from far away as Virginia.

This is Bill crossing the finish line. It was his 10th year competing. I was amazed! I don't think I could have crawled up that mountain. There was a little drama to the day. The runner who was in first collapsed a few hundred meters from the finish line. He even tried to crawl but his body was having none of it. The ambulance had to come and get him.

Kirsten and I enjoying the beautiful! We were only a few of thousands of people who invaded the town for the race, parade and festival that took place. The emcee announced that Seward had gone from it's regular 3,000 residents to over 20,000 that day. No wonder it was a chore finding a parking space!

Kirsten's little girl, Addison. She had a blast playing with all the rocks while we waited for the runners to come off the mountain.

A random pic of Seward.
